“Walk of Food”

walk of food logoFor the subject Gamification we created new applications for tables tops in a restaurant. Our concept “Walk of Food” is about a game where you have to win your own dish in a restaurant. It’s easy to see why many parents of young children avoid restaurants and prefer to eat at home, where thrown food will hit only members of the immediate family. But sometimes it’s necessary and even fun to eat out with young children! Parents not only want to go to MacDonalds if they go out for dinner with their children, they want to eat something culinary and talk to each other. Children want to eat something simple and play during the wait time so they will not gonna be bored. That’s the reason why we created the “Walk of Food”.

Target group

Our target group consists mostly of children, but also parents. Parents can enjoy the food while the children enjoy themselves with the Walk of Food game. They can win the food for their parents if they play good, but if they don’t the parents can enjoy the game as well and you will have a great night and dinner with your family. The game is not gender specific. It’s focused more on children mostly between the ages of 8 up to 15, but also older people who like to play a game.


The game is controlled by a touchscreen. Push on “Welcome” to enter the Walk of Food game screen. Every player has an own side bar with the options “Help” to get instructions how to play the game and “Pawns” to choose the color of the pawn. Click on “Drinks” to choose which beverage to drink. Click on “Toss” in the middle of the touchscreen to throw the dice. The pawn counts the number of steps ahead of itself. Click on a street to see which dish can be bought and to see the details of the dish. Click on “Order” to order all the dishes so they will arrive at the same time at the table. Click on “Next course” to switch the Walk of food from entree to main course and again to switch the main course into desserts. Click on “Finished” and the player will get the check.

User Scenario

When the people sit down and look at the table they see the startscreen of ‘Walk of food’. The other option is that they see game that has already started, so they can begin right away. When the game has already started, they can choose pawn and start to play for theirentré. They can roll the dice by clicking on it. Every player has 2 minutes of time to roll the dice. The pawn moves out of itself. When someone stands on dish they can choose the dish for themselves. When the actually want to order the dish, they have to wait until people have stand three times on that dish before they can order it.

After the entré, there is switch button to go to the main course. Then you see the same game board, but with main dishes instead of entré’. The game goes the same way. This is also for the desserts. Drinks are separately from the board. Otherwise it will take too long and you have to switch while you are playing another game. For more information about the dish, people can click on it and there will appear more information such as ingredients, calories, etc.



The start screen consists of a large rectangular gameboard with in the middel of the rectangle a black rectangle with the text “Walk of Food” in it. “Walk of” is coloured white and “Food” is coloured dark red.The board (the outer rectangle) is divided into 44 small dark grey squares. A couple squares are coloured dark red and dark blue. The top left square is green and has the word “start” in white in it. In the bottom right corner of the black rectangle the amount op players is shown. The number is dark green, the text “players” behind the number is coloured white.


This screen has the shape of a grey horseshoe, with the opening toward the player. Both ends of the horseshoe are bigger than the rest of the horseshoe and instead of the colour grey they are silver. At both ends of the horseshoe there are symbols. On the left there is a green V-symbol. On the right there is a red X-symbol. Above the red X-symbol there is a dark green circle with a dark blue question mark in it. Above this circle there is a smaller grey circle. In the middle of the horseshoe there is a light blue circle that almost encompasses the entire center of the horseshoe. In the center of this blue circle a dark red square is positioned, with the word “start” in black in it. Once start has been clicked, the light blue circle turns dark blue and up to five cartoon heads appear in the middle of the circle. Left of the heads there is a scrollbar.


The game screen is the same as the start screen, except this time there are dishes on each square. Only the square in the top left corner with the word “start” in it does not have a dish in it. Depending on the ‘mode’ players are in, for instance entree, main course or dessert, the squares will show the appropriate dishes. For example, when a consumer is in ‘dessert mode’ the dishes on the squares are only desserts.


The dice screen is the same as the player screen, though there are a couple exceptions. First, the dark green circle now has a cartoon head in it, whereas first a question mark was in it. Second, the smaller circle now has a dice in it. Third, the circle in the center of the horseshoe is divided into two horizontal parts. The bottom is light blue, the upper part is white. In the middle of this divided circle a number of the dice is shown in black. At the left of the horseshoe there is an upward rectangular box, with a dark red background and black outlining. In the top left corner of this box the dishes are shown. At the bottom of the box a rounded rectangular button has the text “order now” in white in it. At the bottom right of the horseshoe there is another rounded rectangular button. This button has the name of the menu in it. The words are coloured black and the background of the button is dark red. Underneath the button a black arrow points to the right.


The name of a dish is on the top of this screen and is coloured white. Under the name of the dish is a white horizontal stripe. Under this stripe the preperation time and cook time are shown. Under these two, the ingredients of the dish are summed up. At the left of the screen there is a scrollbar.

Asset list

To develop the game, there are a three things that are necessary. In the first place, digital tables where people can play ‘’The Walk of Food’’. There are 20 tables needed. In the second place, a designer who can design the game for us and put the game into the tables is necessary. And there is the need of software that can handle this game. These three things are necessary to develop the ‘’Walk of Food’’.
